Matt Mooney

Founder/Pro Basketball Player

I grew up for most of my childhood in Wauconda, Illinois, a suburb northwest of Chicago. For my high school years I attended Notre Dame High School in Niles, IL. After a modest high school career, I had one division 1 scholarship offer to play at the Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs. I took it. Before I could ever step on the court at Air Force, I had to go through six weeks of basic training to get admitted to the school. It was mentally and physically the hardest six weeks of my life. I’m grateful for my time there because of friendships made, and it taught me mental toughness and discipline. After the 2014-15 season at Air Force, I transferred to University of South Dakota in Vermillion, SD where I played for Coach Craig Smith. I spent three of the best years of my life (2015-2018) in the middle of nowhere South Dakota. I loved my teammates, coaches, and the people. This is where I developed a relationship with God through some great people and a spiritual mentor of mine, Doug Adams. On the court, we won a regular season Summit League championship. Individually, I was First Team All-Summit League two times. After graduating with a degree in Business Entrepreneurship, I decided to pursue other options for my final year of eligibility. Ultimately, I decided to play my last year for Coach Beard at Texas Tech for the 2018-19 season. It turned out to be a pretty good decision. We finished 31-7, won the Big 12 Regular Season Championship, and went all the way to the National Championship. I was awarded Second Team All Big 12, and Final Four All Tournament Team.

I went undrafted in 2019. I went to training camp with the Memphis Grizzlies before playing with their G-League affiliate, Memphis Hustle. January 14, 2020 I signed a two way contract with the Cleveland Cavaliers, and scored my first NBA points against the New York Knicks on January 19, 2020. I played with the Raptors G-League affiliate, Raptors 905, in the 2021 G League Bubble. I am still chasing my NBA dream and hoping for another shot.

Through 31:8, I hope to inspire and teach the next generation through things I’ve learned throughout my journey. I want kids to know they are more than what they do. Their character and their heart towards others is what’s most important. God has changed my life forever and placed some incredible mentors and role models in my life to help me get to where I am. I want 31:8 to give kids hope, inspiration, and purpose through mentorship and relationship with God.

Greg Kahler

Coach & Mentor Aberdeen, SD

My name is Greg Kahler. My players call me GK. I currently live in Aberdeen, South dakota but am originally from Dell Rapids, South Dakota. After graduating high school I attended the University of South Dakota where I worked as a student manager for the Men’s Basketball program. After 2 years I transferred to Dakota State University where I served as a Student Assistant Coach. In my experience at DSU my primary responsibilities were Player Development and Recruiting. Currently I am a Skill Development Trainer and Director of Social Media for Sacred Hoops Basketball.

I spend most of my days in the gym training upwards to 30+ High School and Collegiate athletes around my area. I have an extreme passion for taking a player, seeing what he’s got, and working relentlessly to bring them the results on the court they desire. But, more importantly, I value developing these athletes as people of character. One day the ball will stop bouncing for them, and when that day comes I pray their identity is in themselves as a person, not a player. I always tell my athletes, PERSON > PLAYER. I work to build both. The person and the player.

I fully devoted my life to Christ during my freshman year of college. I was the stereotypical college student who lived for Friday and Saturday nights, and forgot all about the importance of Sundays. Until, one day when Mooney invited me to a bible study. Where God spoke to me through a stranger, telling me that I am unworthy of his love, but he still chooses to give it to me regardless. After that moment I began diving into my relationship with Christ. Through my walk of faith, I aim to spread God's word and glory to every person and player I come across. Which is exactly why I'm beyond excited to be part of 31:8. I’m grateful for the opportunity to serve 31:8 and serve athletes in my area.
